Maldives Update: April 3, 2007.

Officially legalisation private broadcasting in the Maldives was announced on Wednesday by Minister of Information, Mohamed Nasheed.

Maldives today called for making the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) fully operational.

Maldives Representative to the U.N has dismissed the UN concerns over religious freedom. UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion had published a strong critical report in August 2006.

The protests have triggered another bout of violence between the police and public. Opposition parties have been demanding the resignation of Commissioner Adam Zahir after recent spate of police violence.
