Maldives Update: April 25, 2007.

Two former female leaders of the opposition were involved in separate confrontations with law- enforcement authorities.
Aishath Aniya was asked to attend the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs for questioning in relation to comments she made about the veil in media.
Shehenaz Abdullah was denied an opportunity to address the court and was convicted without a lawyer present.

The Government has called on the opposition Party to participate in the proposed Commonwealth -sponsored constitutional conference.
MDP has rejected the invitation, saying that the party’s participation in a Commonwealth -sponsored constitutional conference is “out of the question" since the conference is “another façade” to mask the government’s lack of genuine commitment to reform.
